The Samsung Galaxy S20 is the smallest of the new S series. But it doesn't have to be ashamed. The smartphone currently has the highest display brightness we measured. Read what else it can do in the review.
The Samsung Galaxy S20 is the smallest of the three newly introduced devices from Samsung's current S series. But it doesn't have to hide behind its big brothers Galaxy S20 + and Galaxy S20 Ultra. We particularly noticed the very bright display of the smartphone. You can read about the other advantages and disadvantages of the device in the following test report.
The Samsung Galaxy S20 is available in the color variants "Cloud Pink", "Cloud Blue" and "Cosmic Gray" with the storage combination 8 GB / 128 GB at a recommended retail price of 899 euros. The 5G version costs 100 euros more. In addition to supporting the current cellular standard, users have 12 GB of RAM available.
It is nice that Samsung did not do without the 120 Hz display even for the smallest and therefore comparatively cheapest model in the new series. In the review of the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra, we highlighted the advantages. The panel of the Galaxy S20 is no less high quality.
Compared to its biggest brother, the Galaxy S20 with its 6.2 inches appears almost puny. However, here it is actually a direct comparison. 6.2 inches undoubtedly define a phablet and quite a few smartphone users will surely enjoy the slim Galaxy S20 design. Accordingly, the smartphone is very good in the hand and users do not have to shy away from one-hand operation, which is a clear advantage over over-phablets such as the Galaxy S20 Ultra with 6.9 inches.
A smaller format also means less weight. The Galaxy S20 weighs only 163 grams, which further supports the portability in addition to the slim design. You have to cut back on the battery capacity, which is still 4000 mAh on the Galaxy S20.
Displaying a 120 Hz refresh rate requires more power. With the optionally adjustable 60 Hz, we were able to document a stamina of over 9 hours in our test procedure. A corresponding separate test must show how the runtime behaves in the long run at twice the repetition rate. The display brightness we measured has proven to be outstanding. This is a whopping 847 cd / m², which amazed us. The Samsung Galaxy S20 is currently one of the smartphones with the brightest displays. To date, our leaderboards were topped by the previous year's Galaxy S10 and Galaxy S10 + models, where we measured 733 cd / m² and 746 cd / m², respectively. We will place the Galaxy S20 in the leaderboard shortly.
Like the other Galaxy S20 models, the smallest runs with Samsung's own Exynos processor (model "990") of the latest generation. European users let themselves be seen to feel disadvantaged because the Galaxys are operated with Snapdragon CPUs from Qualcomm in the American market, for example. They are not only said to have more performance, the processors also often prove to be more powerful in benchmarks. Nevertheless, performance is important in practice. Multitasking with many apps that run in the background is also no problem with Exynos processors.
