Did you forget your wallet and keys? No problem!

The number of everyday objects that a smartphone can replace is constantly increasing, including cameras, media players, computers and wallets. Soon you won't even need your car key if you have your phone with you.

As discovered by 9to5Mac, the recently released beta for iOS 13.4 for developers includes the mention of a "CarKey" API. It will work similarly to some modern keys that only need to be nearby to unlock, lock, and even start the car, and it will be compatible with both iPhone and Apple Watch.

Part of the text found in the API shows that the function will be included in the existing wallet application. Similar to how Express Transit Cards work right now, no Face-ID has to be used to check the interaction of the CarKey after the first connection.

"To use the CarKey, hold the iPhone or Apple Watch to the reader. It works automatically without the need for a face ID. You can change the express mode settings in your wallet."

This means that you can use either your iPhone or Apple Watch to unlock and start your car - even if the battery is empty.

Other undiscovered information in the API seems to indicate the ability to share the key with others who have installed an Apple device using the Wallet app. This way, anyone you want to grant access to your car, such as a family member, can access your vehicle.

Is there a catch?

To do this, you first have to install the car manufacturer's app, place your cell phone on the vehicle's NFC reader and find the corresponding element in your wallet app. From there you can add it to your Apple Watch.

Do you have a heart for older cars? Then you'd better not be too happy - here's the catch: This only works with NFC-compatible cars; this excludes a large number of older models.

There is also no official announcement from Apple regarding this feature, so we cannot be entirely sure that it will be launched at all. Although it is very likely given the amount of information contained in the API.
