Apple WWDC 2020 online only: The Most Important Things in Brief

Apple's WWDC, the annual World Wide Developers' Conference where the company presents its new software every year, will no longer take place in California.

Instead of its normal location in San Jose, the event will only take place online in June as the authorities have advised against meeting 1,000 or more people due to the coronavirus pandemic. This news was announced in the Apple Newsroom, citing "the current health situation" as the reason for the change.

At the event, we expect Apple iOS 14, watchOS 7, macOS 10.16 to introduce an update for iPadOS and other of its latest software, and it is also possible that we will also see the iPhone SE 2 and the new iPad Pro 2020 there if not sooner.

The WWDC 2020 lectures are now being replaced by online livestreams, but since the vast majority of WWDC viewers are watching Apple's livestreams anyway, that won't make much difference for many.

The online event may now be even more focused on the majority of viewers sitting behind a computer or television and not in front of the Apple stage.

This is not the only technology event that has been impacted by the corona virus - in fact, many technology companies have canceled, postponed, or changed the launch events, so most of them are only online.

Still, the show has to go on, and the corona virus will not affect software development as much as the production of the hardware, which is largely made in China. Even though the launch of the iPhone 9 might be delayed (as rumors suggest), we still expect iOS 14 and macOS 10.16 to come out on time.
